Tis the Season for Fireplace Safety

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The holiday season is in full swing and the new year is just around the corner. However, this is the time of year when many chimney fires occur. While a festive fireplace can set the tone for the holidays, it’s important to consider these safety precautions.

Safety Precautions for the Holiday Season

— The Christmas tree should always be at least 3-4 feet away from the fireplace.

— When the time comes to disposing of your tree, never throw the tree or it’s branches into the fireplace.

— Don’t burn wrapping paper in your fireplace. There are additives in wrapping paper that are highly combustible. This could cause the flames to spill out of the fireplace or travel up the chimney, resulting in a large fire.

— Make sure you are burning well-seasoned wood that has been dried for at least a year. Damp wood accelerates creosote buildup in the chimney.

— If you own a gas fireplace – never throw anything in it and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

— Don’t forget to remove all stockings and holiday decorations away from the fireplace before lighting a fire. These objects are highly flammable and Santa won’t be able to stuff your stockings!

It’s important to know that you can enjoy the holidays with loved ones in a safe surrounding. The best time to learn about your chimney and fireplace is during an inspection. A good technician will tell you how to use it safely. Contact us for your next chimney inspection }.
