While it’s often overlooked, your home’s air quality is a key component to your health.

Prolonged exposure to poor indoor air quality can cause health issues later in life, and can immediately affect children, people with asthma and the elderly. Indoor air quality has become extremely important in recent years as we spend more and more time indoors. Furthermore, new homes are often airtight, leaving little opportunity for irritants to escape.

There are a number of contributors to poor indoor air quality, including pet dander and dust mites. Some sources of poor air quality can be remedied to improve the air you breathe. Some popular contaminants and ways to get rid of them, include:

Interior mold: Mold grows quickly in excessive humidity. You can rid your home of mold by washing the affected area with a chlorine bleach and water mix. Be sure to use only in a well-ventilated location and while wearing protective clothing.

Air fresheners: While their smells are enticing, many air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds and phthalates that are known to cause cancer. To protect yourself, simply limit their use, or don’t use them at all.

Carbon monoxide and other toxic and noxious: When burning natural gas appliances such as furnaces, boilers and water heaters. It is very important that these natural draft appliances vent properly and completely so they do not back vent into the home causing illness or even death. It is recommended to have carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the house, especially in or near the furnace room. Having the furnace flue inspected is also recommend to insure the flue is clear and properly sized to vent the gas appliances. Many older homes have original furnace flues that are too large for newer more efficient replacement appliances. Flues need to be sized correctly to the gas appliance.

Combustion particles released when a fire is burning in a fireplace: Any home with a fireplace is at risk for combustion particles caused by soot and gases released during the burning process. The best way to limit these particles in your home is to have your chimney and fireplace professionally cleaned annually.
